John Perkins Brings his “No Time for the Blues” Concert to the Stage at the Edge Center this August

Join us for a great musical performance by John Perkins as he celebrates the life and people of the Northwoods of Minnesota. John's music is about our Northwoods, his beloved Sand Lake, and a little bit of the Smoky Mountains thrown in for good measure.

John has been doing this benefit concert for the Edge for over ten years now. With his wife Sandy and her spoons, cajón, and energy, the Perkins always draw a great audience of appreciative listeners.

All proceeds from this concert go to support the Edge Center.

The Improvised Life: Exploring the Intersections of Mental Health & Creativity through Jazz

sammiltich.png

On Saturday, June 15 the Edge welcomes Sam Miltich and Friends as they present The Improvised Life: Exploring Intersections of Mental Health & Creativity through Jazz, a program highlighting cultural contributions of famous artists with mental illness and inspiring hope through Sam’s own story and original compositions. Sam’s dialogue explores intersections of mental health and the creative process and his pursuit of well-being amidst the daily challenges of living with a serious mental illness. He will describe his definition of recovery and the sense of purpose he cultivates through quality engagement in career and family life.

Backed by a world-class band consisting of Dave Karr (tenor sax), Chris Bates (bass), and Nathan Norman (drums), the tour expands exposure to jazz in rural communities and increases awareness of the issues faced by a vulnerable population.

The added focus on mental health awareness and education is delivered through a narrative delivered by Sam and woven throughout the concert and provides context to the music being heard and highlights the intersections of creativity, mental illness, improvisation, and cultural contributions in both Sam’s and other legendary musicians’ life and music.

This project aims to increase recognition in the general public of the social and cultural contributions of people with mental illness and inspire hope for recovery while expanding exposure to and knowledge of jazz music for people living with mental illness.

This event partners with a new Edge of the Wilderness community initiative designed to increase awareness of and to reduce the stigma surrounding mental illness with the launch of a Make It OK campaign (https://makeitok.org/).

A Holiday Treat for All Ages

Enjoy a fun “Scandinavian Christmas” evening at the Edge! Ross Sutter's Scandinavian Christmas Show has been performed at the Guthrie, on Prairie Home Companion, in New York, and even in Norway.

Anything that well-traveled must have a lot to keep audiences coming! Indeed a “Scandinavian Christmas” is an evening of singing, music, and dancing for the whole family and is entertaining, enjoyable, and fun.

There are nine musicians and dancers including Sutter, who also plays guitar and button accordion. The concert will feature Cheryl Paschke on fiddle and nyckelharpa (ni-kel harp-ah: the Swedish-keyed fiddle), Marya Hart on piano and pump organ, Rachel Jensen & Kari Loing on Hardanger (har-dahng-er) fiddle, and dancers Carol Sersland and Bruce Bostrum. Adding more music and dance will be the Scandinavian duo Jänta o’ Jag made up of Char Bostrum on fiddle and Art Bjorngjeld on accordion and fiddle. Art and Char will join Carol and Bruce at times, and the stage will be filled with dancers dressed in colorful costumes circling and turning as the musicians play tunes for dancing.

Aadizookaan:  The Sacred Essence of the Story

Anne Dunn and Annie Humphrey.jpg

Anishanabeg-Ojibwe author, poet, storyteller and visual artist Anne Dunn inspired her daughter, Annie Humphrey to write poetry that eventually turned into songwriting. Annie's father taught her to play guitar. Together Mother and Daughter speak, tell, and sing of the human condition. Songs are woven in between the stories and stories contain wisdom to live by. If you are one who appreciates hearing truths from a perspective that follows natural law, then come and be enlightened!

"I think we live in very intense times.  When the Earth runs out of breath, so will we.  The plant nation will be the last to give up on us humans." -Annie

Dunn, 75, was born on the Red Lake Reservation, grew up on the Leech Lake Reservation and currently lives near Bemidji. “Fire in the Village” is her third book, a collection of 75 stories celebrating her 75th birthday. Her book includes stories she remembers and stories she has written — all stories “sent forth as little ambassadors in search of understanding and reconciliation.”  -Anne

Piano Bar: Northern Lights Trio

northern-lights-trio.png

Join us as the Northern Lights Trio celebrates its ten-year anniversary with a benefit concert for the Edge Center! The Piano Bar concert will bring back some previous years' entertainers and music while adding something new for the audience to enjoy.

The first Piano Bar concert was planned as a small performance where the Northern Lights Trio would share the stage with a few guests at onstage tables. The turnout was greater than expected, however, and the trio performed for a respectably-sized audience beyond the stage tables. Back then the Northern Lights Trio was made up of Ron Olsen of Bigfork on keyboard and vocals, his brother Don Olsen of Bigfork on percussion and vocals, and Effie's Jerry Hagen on guitar, bass, and vocals.

original-northern-lights-trio

Times have changed and there are at least six musicians and singers expected on stage this year. There will be plenty of show history to talk and play about, and it will all be for the Edge’s benefit.

This year's show will include the original trio members, along with Terry Price of Marcell on guitar, percussion, and vocals, Harold Boege of Marcell on bass and vocals, Gary Piepho on vocals, and Cassy Bender of Northome on vocals. These additions were made over the years to “keep the entertainment fresh,” as Ron Olsen says, and to help make sure audiences keep coming and growing.

The trio's performances are rarely set in stone until they happen, but this show may incorporate video footage of prior performances, including footage of the late Bill Hiede's special renditions of Frank Sinatra's music. It is certainly one show that should not be missed.

All proceeds from this concert go to support the Edge Center.

John Perkins

john-perkins.jpg

Join us for a great musical performance by John Perkins as he celebrates the life and people of the Northwoods of Minnesota. He will be joined by his wife Sandy and Effie's own Jerry Hagen.

John's music is about our Northwoods, his beloved Sand Lake, and a little bit of the Smoky Mountains thrown in for good measure. He writes and sings about a long-ago time, a simpler time, and a very difficult time. His songs are about the tough people who settled this wild woodsy, swampy area, about majestic trees, magnificent Showy Lady's-slippers, lakes, and of course mosquitoes...

Most of all, John sings about the people: Native Americans, loggers, farmers, and ladies of the evening are all woven into his songs.

All proceeds from this concert go to support the Edge Center.

$10 for adults, $5 for children 12 & under.
